Using Apple Watch’s cellular feature, you can make calls, use the Walkie-Talkie feature, reply to messages, receive notifications, and stream podcasts or music, even when you don’t have your iPhone with you or are linked to a Wi-Fi connection. This breakthrough technology is now available thanks to a virtual Sim card in your watch that is a copy of the Sim card in your iPhone. So, now you can stay connected, even when you need to be out and about, but you don’t want to drag your phone along for the ride. There is one catch—okay two catches. One is that this feature is not available on earlier-models of Apple Watch. The second is, you need to use the same cellular plan for both your iPhone and Apple Watch. This can be done when you initially set up your Apple Watch, or you can add your carrier later at any time by opening the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then tap “My Watch,” and “Cellular” on the next screen. Then follow the instructions from there.
You can even set up another family member who has a properly equipped Apple Watch but does not have an iPhone of their own, if your carrier supports the use of a managed Apple Watch. During setup, you’ll be given an option to add the additional watch. If your carrier does not support this, you may need to use an alternative carrier if that is a viable option for you. If you do change carriers, you’ll need to remove the previous service plan on your iPhone first. You can do this by opening the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then tap the “My Watch” tab, followed by tapping “Cellular.” Tap the “Information” button next to your cellular plan (it looks like a lower-case “i” in a circle), then tap “Remove.” Once your watch is added to your cellular plan, it will automatically look for the best signal available when performing tasks or functions. The best signal could come from your iPhone if it is close by, a Wi-Fi network you’ve used on your iPhone, or through a cellular connection. You can turn the cellular feature on and off by touching and holding the bottom of the screen on your Apple Watch, then swiping up to access the Control Center. You’ll see a symbol that looks like a thin antennae with waves coming off both sides of it. This will allow you to turn the feature on or off at your leisure, depending on your needs. If you ever have any questions about setting up your Apple Watch with cellular, connecting a family member’s Apple Watch to your iPhone, changing carriers, or if you’re having problems getting your watch connected to cellular, look for an independent repair facility that offers Apple Watch Series 5 repair services in VA. Their trained technicians can help with the setup, and they can perform a diagnostic test if a problem is occurring in either the Apple Watch in question or your iPhone.
